BlackBoyDreaming is an original 11x17 inch mixed media piece on cardstock created in 2024. Incorporating acrylic paint and marker, the piece captures a moment in young Jeanty’s life where he would climb to the roof of his Brooklyn building and envision a better future life for himself and his family. Inspired by the graffiti that adorned NYC in the 1980s and 1990s, the piece pays homage to art form that led Jeanty to begin creating art. The silhouette piece overexaggerates the nose and lip qualities to bring recognition to the beauty of Black features which are often omitted, disregarded, and ridiculed. The expressive hair represents the versatility and individuality of Black people while the Sigma letter on the back of the shirts pays homage to Jeanty’s current fraternity affiliation in Phi Beta Sigma, Inc.
